Candlelight flickers across the worn pages, and the Sanskrit characters dance rhythmically, like graceful maidens chanting ancient hymns. Transfixed, the young boy follows their motion, and his soul sings in unison with them:

A mass of radiance, glowing all around,
I see thee, hard to look at, on every side;
Glory of flaming fire and sun, immeasurable,
without beginning, middle, or end of power.
Infinite arms, whose eyes are the moon and sun,
I see thee, whose face is flaming fire,
burning the whole universe with thy radiance.

Quietly another voice enters the song. It is a gentle, beloved voice, calling him, calling “Sundar,” drawing him out of the chant, away from the dance. Slowly closing his inner eyes, he looks up into the candlelit face of his mother. “Come, Sundar! It is past midnight already. Soon it will be morning. You are only eight years old, my son. You must rest.” Obediently, reverently the boy returns the holy books to their place and seeks his mat. The candle flickers one last time and dies. Later he remembers:

Although my family was Sikh, we had great reverence for the Hindu scriptures. My mother was a living example of the love of God and a devoted follower of Hindu teachings. Every day she awoke before dawn, prepared herself with the cold water of the ritual bath, and read either from the Bhagavad Gita or from one of the other sacred writings. Her pure life and her complete devotion influenced me more strongly than it did the other family members. From the time of my earliest memories, she impressed upon me one rule above all others: when I woke from sleep, my first duty was to pray to God for spiritual nourishment and blessings. Only then could I break the night’s fast. Sometimes I objected to this rule and insisted on having breakfast first, but my mother would never relent. Usually with coaxing, but when necessary with force, she impressed this rule deep onto my soul: Seek God first and only then turn to other things.

At that time, I was too young to recognize the true value of this education, and I resisted her. Later, however, I came to appreciate her example. Whenever I think back now on her loving guidance, I cannot thank God enough for her. For she planted in me, and tended in my early life, a profound love and fear of God. She carried a great light within her, and her heart was the best spiritual training anyone could have: “You must not be careless and worldly,” she would say. “Seek peace of soul, and love God always. Someday you must give yourself fully to the search, you must follow the way of the sadhu.”

With pleading eyes, the boy looks up at his father:

Please help her, Father! She is so old and the weather is turning cold. I spent all my pocket money to buy food for her, but I did not have enough for a blanket. Please give me money to buy her a blanket.

Sardar Sher Singh retorts:

Listen, Sundar! Over the years I have given that widow all manner of help. We are not responsible for her. The other people in town should also help look after her. They must also learn charity. You cannot be responsible for everyone all the time. Others must learn to play their part. Do not worry about her now. You have done more than enough for her.

Downcast, the boy turns away. Agony of conscience.

Has not Mother always said we should show compassion and pity? Has Father no heart? What if no one else helps her? She might freeze in the night. Is there nothing I can do? Maybe…No, I mustn’t! That would be wrong. But then again, Father has so much; he will never miss a few rupees. It is for a good cause; I’m not stealing for myself…

Sundar was wrong. Father does miss it. In the evening, Sardar Sher Singh calls together the household and announces that he is missing five rupees. “Has anyone taken money from my purse?” he asks, gently but firmly. Each one answers in turn. Sundar quietly says, “No Father, I didn’t do it.” The day closes somber and unresolved.
Sundar sleeps fitfully. He tosses and turns. In his dreams, he sees the stern face of his father, hears the disappointment in his voice: “How could you steal from me, your father? How could you secretly disobey me? Even now, after I ask for the truth, still you lie to me.” Sundar knows this is not dharma – devotion. This is adharma – sin.

It is evil. The holy books speak of karma – the relentless cycle of sin and death by whose law every sinful act burdens the soul and carries painful consequences. The holy books warn that we will reap what we sow, in this life or the next. How can I escape this karma? How can I undo what I have done? What good is compassion for others in need if my own soul is burdened?

Sardar Sher Singh hears a quiet, frightened voice:

Father! Wake up, Father! Something terrible has happened. It was I, Father. I stole your money to buy a blanket for the widow. Forgive me, Father. I want to escape the karma; I am ready to accept punishment; I am ready to accept it as penance for this sin.

Now awake, Sardar Sher Singh sees the anguish in the boy’s face and sees the hours of anguish behind it. He takes hold of the boy – not to punish him, but to take him up into his strong arms; not with anger, but with love. Gently he says: “I have always trusted you, my child, and now I have good proof that my trust was not misplaced. Sleep in peace now, for you have shown courage to choose what is right. In this way, you have turned the wrong to good. I, too, am sorry that I refused you money for the widow. I will not refuse you such a request again.”

Of course you can!

Avoid letting other people – or your own thoughts – tell you that you can’t do whatever you have in mind. A challenge isn’t a problem, it’s an opportunity to excel and move forward. But you must see your challenge in a positive light or it may not offer you the forward movement you’re really looking for.

Do you tackle challenges by getting stressed out and aggravated? If so, it’s time to learn how to avoid that conflict and deal with stress effectively. Anyone can learn to do it, but the mindset is very important. Most of the struggles you face come from not looking at things through an optimist’s eye.

Seeing your challenges as opportunities will help you make it through with flying colors.

The way a challenge is presented to you might be uncomfortable, but you can take that and turn it around to your advantage. Then, things that try to take you down can actually build you up and be used for your good, instead. You may even begin to look forward to your challenges to move ahead in life and accomplish even more.

compiled and edited by kim comer

Seek not to understand so that thou mayest believe, but believe so that thou mayest understand.
Augustine of Hippo

to the reader

As a large, red sun rises from the Punjabi plains, the solitary figure of a sadhu – an Indian holy man – comes into view, trudging along a dusty road. In another frame the figure appears again, this time toiling to reach a remote Tibetan village along a narrow, icy track better suited for goats than for humans. In yet another, the man appears at the edge of an ancient marketplace at dusk, mingling with the crowd as he seeks a place to sit and rest. Wherever this sadhu appears, those who look into his eyes immediately sense his extraordinary humility and peace. They discover a mystic…
Just as Sundar Singh appeared in such scenes again and again – without prior announcement, without introduction, without credentials – so he appears in this book. “Scenes,” the first section, contains impressions from key events in his life. It is based both on accounts by Sundar Singh himself, and by writers who knew him. “Conversations,” the second, contains dialogues that draw freely on material from all six of Sundar Singh’s books, as well as interviews and articles. Both sections are interspersed with parables that punctuate the themes. Though structurally unusual, the resulting collage allows us to encounter the sadhu in the way his contemporaries did: not as a systematic thinker, but as a personal teacher.
In his teachings as in his life, Sundar Singh offers little by way of rational orientation. He defies categorization and critical analysis. The impact of his message, however, is always direct and immediate. His voice rings with a clarity that rises from the deepest, clearest sources of life itself.

Once as I wandered in the mountains, I came upon an outcropping of rocks, and as I sat on the highest rock to rest and look out over the valley, I saw a nest in the branches of a tree. The young birds in the nest were crying noisily. Then I saw how the mother bird returned with food for her young ones. When they heard the sound of her wings and felt her presence nearby, they cried all the more loudly and opened their beaks wide. But after the mother bird fed them and flew away again, they were quiet. Climbing down to look more closely, I saw that the newly hatched birds had not yet opened their eyes. Without even being able to see their mother, they opened their beaks and begged for nourishment whenever she approached.

These tiny birds did not say: “We will not open our beaks until we can see our mother clearly and also see what kind of food she offers. Perhaps it is not our mother at all but instead some dangerous enemy. And who knows if it is proper nourishment or some kind of poison that is being fed to us?” If they had reasoned thus, they would never have discovered the truth. Before they were even strong enough to open their eyes, they would have starved to death. But they held no such doubts about the presence and love of their mother, and so after a few days, they opened their eyes and rejoiced to see her with them. Day by day they grew stronger and developed into the form and likeness of the mother, and soon they were able to soar up into the freedom of the skies.

We humans often think of ourselves as the greatest living beings, but do we not have something to learn from these common birds? We often question the reality and the loving nature of God. But the Master has said: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Whenever we open our hearts to God, we receive spiritual nourishment and grow more and more into the likeness of God until we reach spiritual maturity. And once we open our spiritual eyes and see God’s presence, we find indescribable and unending bliss.

These radiating chakra energy points, make up the Aura, Through these energy points we attract and repel people and events into our life through a process known as radionics, or projection. Our lives are a reflection of what we think, believe, and take to be true.

In this section we provide a Chakra Chart to the 7 main chakra points, an overview of their place and counter balances, and explanation to the Inner Flute.

Overview : The Aura is a colour image projected from the emanations of several energy points on the body. Each energy point is Known as a “Chakra”; a Hindu word meaning “Spinning Wheel”. Each Charka Spins in and out radiating a vibration of basic energy. The energy it radiates is governed by the place of the charka, and its ensuing function indicated on the chart. The actual projection of any one chakra will include the basic energy and how that energy is currently understood by the person owning that chakra, therefore it reveals what it holds, and signals its condition; Positive or negative, understood or repressed, interactive or isolated. Through this signalling, the chakras attract and repel people and events into our lives, depending on the lessons we need to learn to aid in the growth or expression of that energy centre. Some Psychics known as sensitive’s read these signals by feeling out the projections from the chakras and interpreting them into a useable language to achieve an understanding of the person and their situation. Healers also work on these points by feeling the condition of the chakra, and its relationship to the other energy points, then using various forms of energy such as; Crystals, Oils, herbs, colours, sound, Reiki, or Chi adjust the chakra and chakra system to a more harmonious state.

Working with Chakras is an excellent method of attaining more understanding of the self it encourages one, to be more sensitive to them selves, and to take action in aiding the flow of energy throughout the whole of the energy system. Such sensitivity promotes good health, a positive mind, a cleaner emotional centre, a positive sense of self.

The Chart fig 1, indicates the chakra points and their position on the body, their colour vibration and relationship to the three forms of self. Fig2 outlines their names, basic natures, and corresponding balancing chakra points. The next two areas of knowledge are not often mentioned in Chakra books therefore I really wanted to include them, as I have found that many people do get stuck without little extra bit of information on the Chakra Counter balances, and Three forms of self.

Chakra Counter Balances Fig 2, Shows that the Heart is the Centre of the Chakra energy system. It’s the centre because of its nature, its nature is the same as Tao, the same as our spiritual path which is to Love in the unconditional sense, all of the self and world we create for ourselves; to create a harmony and balance between opposites, allowing, understanding, forgiving, accepting where required. Uniting and blending bringing all into a flow of harmony & oneness.

The same drawing also indicates the balances above and below the heart. These balances represent the path of growth. One builds this growth not from the bottom of the charka tree, but from the middle out, from the heart outward so that growth opens like a flower from the heart. All energy points require the heart to survive, without it there can be no balance. Solar Plexus & Throat This makes the first point of growth a positive sense of self. A positive sense who we are (Solar Plexus) balanced with a positive self expression of the self (throat). Building a positive sense of self is the first goal, before delving into the lower self or higher self. Learning to accept who we are, for what we are. There can be no growth before one accepts themselves, and takes a positive view of who they are. Naval & Brow The Naval, our emotional and sensational centre is balanced by the Brow. This balance is built on the first goal being achieved. The navel is full of current sensations and emotions as well as the deposit of all previous emotions and sensations; the build up those feelings relates to our subconscious mind, hence its association with the brow chakra. The Naval only feels, it can not think. Feelings need to be balanced by rational which is the domain of the Brow, therefore the link between the two allows one to see, and to personify their feelings. Working with the Heart chakra the two can be balanced. To attempt to delve higher or lower before attaining a positive sense of self can lead people to delusions of grandeur, or feelings of paranoia. The subconscious mind contains all of our experiences, hopes and dreams, fears and doubts, with out the light of self it’s a dark place. Root & Crown Are the final areas. These are purely diametrically opposed for one contains the ideal of perfection, and the other contains the animal of being human and the necessity of survival. This does not mean that the human animal is negative, certainly not, it only means that the animal needs to be enlightened too. The animal in us again does not have higher brain functions, and wont surrender it’s self unless coxed to do so gently by the heart and the building of the previous realms.

Three forms of self Fig 1, divides the charkas into forms of the self. Lower Self is governed by the Solar plexus, the ego, and acts on earthly will, for the sake of sensation and survival. Largely reactive, and acting upon the programming of the subconscious mind, locked into reoccurring patterns of behaviour. Self is also governed by the Solar plexus, the ego, however it also includes a love for the self and positive self expression. Largely innovative, creative, and lives for self expression, Spontaneous and energetic. Higher self is governed by the Crown; it has vision knowledge, thoughts and expression. Acts for the good of all, has no sense of individual self only considers the whole self. Its idealistic, patient, understanding, allowing, and loving to all aspects of the self.

The Inner Flute: The Inner flute is a mystical channel that connects all chakra points in a straight line. The channel works in both directions. This channel is used for drawing energy in, or to expel energy. It’s the same channel associated with the raising of Kundalini, and the central nervous system. Energy can be drawn in, by means breathing through the crown and down to the feet. Energy can not be expelled through the root, energy can only be expelled through the crown. This means that what ever is expelled travels through the heart and brow, so that it can be seen, understood, and changed. The same channel is used in Tantra, Yoga, and magical practice.

Try to stop thinking about your daily life and try to clear your mind.

In the beginning, quieting the mind may seem difficult. But with practice you will be able to do that.

Meditation is not about performance. It is about letting things flow.

What is the best way to meditate? Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. It does not matter if you sit down, lie down or stand up –feeling relaxed is all that is required.

Wear something simple and comfortable that will not distract you. Close your eyes to block out the senses.

Stopping your thought processes takes discipline, but it is not impossible. As thoughts appear do not pay any attention to them. You will not be able to keep hundreds of thoughts from popping up into your mind.

Let the thoughts come. Do not hang on to them. Just let them go. They will come and go. Just witness them. Count ONE silently in your mind. Keep counting ONE gently & continuously ….. ONE, ONE, ONE, ONE, ONE …….

Thoughts are bound to appear again in mind. Let them come & go. Witness them and just let them go.

Keep repeating in mind ONE, ONE, ONE continuously & slowly….. If mind wanders and it will, gently bring your attention to repeating ONE, ONE, ONE………

Bring your awareness gently back to counting ONE, ONE, ONE …..when mind wanders and next thoughts keep coming.

With this practice, number of thoughts will decrease. Progressively you will experience more & more peace.

Practice this for 20 minutes a day.

The words of the affirmation statement – in themselves -when spoken, thought of, or written *without* a pictorial (visualized) or emotional connection — make a very weak affirmation.

Daily Positive Affirmations, when worded correctly — and when emotionally charged – are able to tap into the unlimited creative power of your subconscious mind, and manifest your desires.

Affirmations are not all created equal. Some are, of course, better than others. There are *power affirmations* that have been proven again and again to work – and I’ll reveal some of them in a moment.

When you examine the structure of these power affirmations, you, too, can learn how to create your own powerful affirmations for your specific purposes.

Consider the following:

“I am what I choose to be.”
“All my needs are met instantaneously.”
“I love and accept myself exactly as I am.”
“_____________ comes to me easily and effortlessly.”
(Fill in the blank with what you desire.)
“I am now perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.”
“I now create my wonderful, ideal life.”

What do the above power Daily Positive Affirmations have in common?

1) They’re stated in the present tense.

An affirmation is more effective when stated in the present tense. For example; “I now have a wonderful job.” Avoid affirming something in the future tense, e.g. “I am going to have a wonderful job” or the results will always be waiting to happen.

2) They express a positive statement.

Daily Positive Affirmations need to be stated in the most positive terms possible. Avoid negative statements. Affirm what you do want, rather than what you don’t want. For example: “I am no longer sick.” This is a negative statement. Instead, affirm: ”I am now perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.” This statement is much more powerful as it is positive and reinforces your desired goal and doesn’t confuse your subconscious mind with the mention of the undesirable condition.

3) They’re short and specific.

Short affirmations are easy to say, and have a far greater impact at the subconscious level than those which are long and wordy. Keeping them specific and to the point adds power as the idea is uncluttered by extraneous elements.

The mechanics that make affirmations powerful are:

* Repetition
The importance of repetition cannot be overemphasized. It imprints the affirmation into your subconscious mind.

* Emotions
Get involved, be passionate, and use your emotions. Think carefully about the meaning of the words as you repeat them rather than just writing, typing or saying them.

* Persistence
Practicing affirmations with persistence achieves results much sooner than practicing them periodically. Successive sessions will have a compounding effect.

My presentation today is titled “Meditation in Oneness.” Oneness is why we meditate and oneness is the reason we can meditate. It all sounds too simple to be meaningful, but it is meaningful. I promise. The concept of “oneness” conveys to us the essential nature of God. Knowing that essential nature is the reason we seek to be enlightened, and it is the means by which we will become enlightened.

Buddha in Oneness:

When the Buddha proclaimed his enlightenment he said simply, “I am awake.” What was he awakened from? Had he just finished a long nap? Yes, in a manner of speaking.

When we realize our true identity in God we are finally awakened from the dream, or illusion of the constructed identity of the human ego, and the temporary reality of time and space. Only God is eternal and therefore real or awake. Only in God can we truly understand who we are, and why we are.

In God there is no illusion or delusion. In God there is no duality of good and evil. In God there seem to be many different things, but in reality there is only one thing. There is only God, and we are all cells in the body of that one God.

Jesus in Oneness:

Jesus told us in John 8:32 that if we knew the truth it would make us free. So what is this great truth that sets us free? It could refer to truth ingeneral, but God is the only truth, so I feel this verse refers to what I like to call the greatest truth.

Just before his crucifixion Jesus was asked by a scribe what the greatest commandment was. He responded with the greatest truth, which is generally ignored or taken for granted, because of its simplicity, and its two attendant commandments. In Mark 12:29, Jesus said:

· “…Hear me Israel the Lord our God is One, (that’s the great truth)

· and you will love God with all your heart, soul and mind

· and like that, you will love your neighbor as yourself” (the greatest commandments).

To love something or someone with all of your being is to be “one” with them, to be in harmony and unity with them. This is important because there is only one thing that ever was or ever will be, and that is God. That is a hard concept for the dualistic mind to wrap itself around.

Oneness in God

· God is all there is.

· Everything is made of God, by God.

· God is the clay of the universe.

· God is in all things and all things are in God.

It is really impossible to be separate from God the One except in awareness. We may feel separated from God, but that is about us, not about God. God has never left us because we are literally a part of God. That is why we meditate, to once more become consciously aware of the greater identity of which our souls are a part.

We are cells in the body of God, and it is through prayer and meditation that we can transfer our energy, or call it our love, to every other cell in that great body. It is the fact that everything is made of the same singular energy, the same God substance that allows our prayers to work for good or ill in the world, and our meditations to draw into our world the wisdom, energy, and love of the one source of all life – God. We are not human beings striving to become spiritual beings. We are spiritual beings striving to overcome the illusion of being human, so we may once more be fully divine.

Tuning Into Oneness

Meditation tunes us into the oneness, the great unity of which we are all a part. Meditation clears a space in our consciousness, and helps us remove the mask of the ego that we all wear. When that mask is off we are no longer separate in awareness and identity from the oneness of God.

When our ego is in the way it is hard to see God. If we are self-centered it is hard to be God-centered. To find the kingdom of heaven we must separate our human/ego self from our divine/soul self. Meditation helps us do that.

Meditation is a matter of focus

Paramhansa Yogananda defined meditation as “deep concentration on God or one of his aspects.” Identification with any person, place, or cause that is not the creator creates self imposed limitations. Meditation helps us step out of the ruts we dig for ourselves, and allows us to experience the expansiveness of the great unity of the One.

Meditation does not have to focus on God, but meditation for me is tuning into and focusing upon God as Yogananda suggested. Why waste time focusing on anything less than the truth? God has all the answers we seek. Meditation can open and maintain a two-way channel to our Father/Mother God, where messages can be sent and received.

A meditative state is the preferred condition from which to pray, listen, or otherwise commune with God. Meditation is a process that can physically calm us, and bring us into a state of peace and maximize our creative potential.

We are spiritual beings. Meditation creates a condition in our body, mind and spirit that is ideal for our spiritual nature to awaken and grow. Meister Eckhart, a German mystic and priest from the Middle Ages said, “When man sits [in meditation], then the coarse passions subside and the luminous mind arises in awareness: Thus consciousness is illuminated.”

Understanding Meditation

Introduction

Knowing that God and everything else is just one thing helps us to accept the fact that we are, in essence, spiritual beings. Any human activity can become a divine meditation if that is our intent. Yogis and Zen masters have known this for centuries.

Creative activities are especially effective as vehicles for super-conscious meditation. Some examples besides sitting meditation are: walking, working, art making, writing poetry and prose, gardening, and ultimately all of the daily rituals of life. Any activity can be raised to the level of a super-conscious meditation, but creative activities seem to be the most effective.

Benefits of meditation

The primary purpose of meditation is to facilitate the awakening of the spiritual consciousness or super-conscious states. Some of the secondary benefits are:

· Awakening the body’s regenerative (healing) energies

· Improvement of the immune system

· Strengthening the body’s functioning

· Slowing the aging process

· Reducing stress

· Improving mental health

· Improvement of the thinking process

· Enhancing our appreciation of life

· Stimulating creativity

· Awakening spiritual insights and abilities

· Acceleration of spiritual growth.

Find time to meditate daily

I try to make time each day to commune with God, and I practice forms of meditation that are effective in bringing me into closer contact with God. That is the singular point of prayer and meditation for me, aside from helping others. My meditative ideal is to be in constant communion with God throughout all the activities of my day. I am not there yet, but I keep trying and improving.

Basic meditation

Traditionally, the concept of meditation elicits the image of a Buddhist monk sitting on the floor with legs overlapping, back straight, eyes shut, and his hands in his lap turned up with thumb and forefinger touching on each hand. He is probably saying an “OM.”

That monk’s meditation process is comprised of several activities. Each activity is intended to increase his energy and strengthen his focus upon God. Meditation is all about creating an energy flow between yourself and the object of your focus or meditations. “What you think, feel, and put your attention upon, you become.” When we meditate we are trying to find re-union with God.

There are many meditation techniques and breathing patterns, but I will keep things simple. In an effective meditative state, an individual should be relaxed, but highly aware, alert, and focused in the moment, the “now.” If you want to be alert you should avoid meditating any place you tend to fall asleep, like your bed or easy chair, because you may find yourself asleep instead of focused on God. This has happened to me too many times.

We may be awake in God when we sleep, but we are unconscious in the world. Only in meditation are we awake in God and the world. We may not have had a great vision or insight during a meditation, but the connection to God we make during meditation heals us and informs us at subconscious and super-conscious levels. The results may take some time to surface in the world, but we must trust God to provide.

Get comfortably positioned

Meditation is usually done while seated, either on the floor (if that is comfortable for you) or in a comfortable, straight-backed chair. Avoid sitting in a position that causes you discomfort or you will be focused on your discomfort and not on God.

Seated comfortably with our hands in your lap, back straight, and your feet flat on the floor, we focus your attention upon our feet and relax them completely. Some people have difficulty sensing when they have relaxed a part of themselves. If this is a challenge for us, we just tense our feet and then let them relax. Proceed up from the feet, tensing and relaxing one body part at a time, until we finish with the head and face.

If our face is relaxed, the rest of our body will generally follow. If we can relax without tensing first, that is fine too.

Breath slowly and rhythmically

Once we are relaxed physically, we breathe slow, deep breaths from our diaphragm (belly). The breathing will relax us more, and oxygenate our blood for the optimal functioning of our brain and body.

Breathing is the foundation of meditation. A good breath pattern is to breathe in four or five counts, hold four or five counts, exhale four or five counts, and repeat at least 5-10 times. Usually the counting helps to narrow your focus and sets a rhythm that eventually you will not have to think about. Finally you let your breathing relax into slower and slower rhythms. There are hundreds of different breathing patterns. Don’t confuse yourself at first. Keep your breathing simple, and it will be effective and powerful.

Relax

Roy Brown, an American yogi and one of the last living disciples of Yogananda, tells us that that the “secret of successful meditation is to relax into the process, so adjustments in mental states and states of consciousness can occur naturally.” Relaxation comes with a lack of striving to achieve a specific result. Striving creates tension and tension doesn’t allow us to relax or be at peace. Some call this relaxation, or lack of striving, “thinking about nothing.” That is not truly what it is. It is an absence of directed thought with the lack of desire for a specific result.

Still your mind

Effective meditation requires that we try to stop our minds from their constant jumping from one thought to another. In the east the mind that jumps from thought to thought is called the “Monkey Mind.” The western mind is considered a monkey mind. Monkey mind or not, the opportunity is available to all God’s children to meditate and communicate with Him. Like anything else, it takes practice to meditate effectively.

It is true that our suburban and urban lifestyles in the west keep us on the run, always trying to balance a multitude of ideas and activities. That is what is necessary in our modern environment if we are to survive from day to day. I do not have the time to sit for hours silently contemplating God in some pastoral setting. At times I wish I did.

Be an empty cup

I don’t know about you, but emptying my mind is easier said than done. Some days my mind resists being emptied. It is sort of like the garbage that sticks to the inside of a trash can when you are trying to empty it. I am always thinking about something, and that is my trash. Our modern world just has us so busy, it is hard not to be thinking, but we have to try separating ourselves from everyday thoughts or they will crowd out God.

We receive peace by letting go of inner and outer conflicts. We discover God’s will when we let go of our human will and our desire to be something or somebody. In other words: When we are full of ourselves (ego personality) we can’t be full of God. Only the empty cup can be filled. Let me remark here that the purpose of self realization is to realize that we are not our limited ego (the mask) but an unlimited divine being made in the image and likeness of God (our true reality).

We are never truly “empty,” but what we try to do is to create a receptive condition like tilled soil that is ready and anticipating God’s seeds to be planted. We don’t know when the seeds will be planted or what fruit they will bear, but we are in a ready and receptive state. We are open to whatever God will plant within us. We might be active and very self-directed people most of the time, but during meditation we try to be receptive and God-directed. That is being an empty cup.

Focus on one simple thing

I don’t try to empty my mind. I remove my attention from my habitual thoughts and feelings by placing my attention on something else. I specifically direct my attention to God or a specific issue about which I seek enlightenment. Having directed the focus of my attention to God, I listen for God’s response. A response always comes – usually it manifests as insight or inspiration. It is an amazing thing.

To think about God in general or about nothing can be too abstract, too diffused; so I often try to focus on one simple thing. In meditation that simple thing is usually our breathing, a mantra or even a point of light, but it could be the sound of flowing water in a fountain, stream, or ocean.

Consider focusing on a visualization which separates body and soul. Your divine self is a sun. You have separated yourself from your body and ego which are before you, and controlled by you. During the meditation you simply see the sun that you are ascend into and become one with the greater sun that God is, until you are one.

Expect God to respond

After you have cleared a space in your head for God to communicate with you, wait patiently and expect to receive an answer. Sometimes it is like sitting around in a doctor’s waiting room. You have to wait for your answer until all the patients (all your issues) are addressed. Then God can see you.

God promised He would answer us, if we asked our questions. You might hear a voice, but most likely you will simply have a flash of insight or understanding. I used to take credit for my “insights” until I realized that it was God inspiring me from within. It is like telepathy; it is instantaneous and often more image than dialogue. After all if “a picture is worth a thousand words” from person to person, what would a picture from God be worth? Some images from God have continued to reveal insights to me for over 35 years so far. As I grow spiritually, I am able to understand more fully what God has revealed to me. God has to build a foundation in us, over time, for some divine insights to be complete.

Meditation produces a physiological effect that is the opposite of the human “fright or flight” stress reaction.

When we are panicked our muscles tense, our respiration increases, our heart rate increases, and our cognitive functions retreat from the neo-cortex to the more primitive portions of the brain. In this state we are driven by our fears and we don’t do our best thinking.

When we meditate our muscles relax, our respiration rate decreases, our heart rate decreases, our cognitive functions increase, and we have access to information we are separated from when we are under stress; our intuition may increase as well.

Sitting meditation/meditation for stress relief

The sitting meditation is the classic meditation we all think of when someone says “meditation.” Meister Eckhart summed up sitting meditation with these words, “I will sit and be silent and listen to the voice of God within me.” That is what meditation is all about, and it is just that simple in its essence.

Basic sitting meditation moves through three stages:

1. The relaxation of the body and mind to create a receptive state of being

a. Find a quiet spot

b. Sit comfortably, with your back straight, your feet flat on the floor, and your hands in your lap (palms up).

c. Progressively tense and relax your muscles from toes to head.

d. Close eyes and roll them up a bit focusing on the center of your forehead, or a point ahead of you. This activates the pineal gland (3rd eye) in our brains.

e. Press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. It helps to make an energy connection between body and brain.

f. Breathe slowly and rhythmically from your belly.

g. Don’t think about anything, just focus on your breath or mantra.

h. Intone a mantra (OM) that connects you to some aspect of God, or repeat a healing affirmation.

i. You should start to feel connected to and centered on the One.

Alpha Brainwave State

When you are fully relaxed in your meditation you should be in the “Alpha” brainwave state which is about 8-12 cycles per second. This state is conducive to physical and mental healing, and is the state where our spiritual centers can open fully.

In the Alpha state you can direct your body and mind to obey your every command through your higher mind, and you can make behavioral changes. In alpha you can manifest changes in your environment (abundance/work/family/ relationships…), and you can change your level of worldly success, in addition to fulfilling your spiritual desires.

Once relaxed we begin:

2. The internal focus on the God within

a. Turn your focus inward to your heart

b. Focus on your breath and let it get slower and slower

c. Focus on some aspect of God you wish insight or healing into

d. Accept that connection and the realization of your point of focus.

Finally we have reached a point where effort has ceased and:

3.      The expansion of consciousness reaches a sense unity or oneness with all creation;

This experience could last from 15 min. to 3 hours.

Ways to Meditate in Unity

Introduction to guided meditations

Guided sitting meditations are somewhat dependant upon the skill of the guide, but they can be very effective in the creation a shared meditation experience. Guided meditations focus and channel our meditation down a specific path. By their very nature they are specific to a concept and so may seem limited, but they are very effective in creating a shared vision. This is important for seekers new to meditation.

During a guided meditation the right (creative/spiritual) brain is dominant, because the left (literal/dogmatic) brain has suspended activity as children do when they listen to a story. They see it. They are there. When we simply allow the Holy Spirit to guide our meditation visualizations they can lead us to unexpected places and blessings. The guide has differing thought processes from our own, so our rational mind has to let go and let the creative spiritual mind control things. Guided group meditations can be very powerful, and they can get us to God in 10-20 minutes so we are ready to begin our unique personal meditations from a powerful place.

So one doesn’t feel “hypnotized” during a guided meditation always be sure to ask that “God’s will be done in this meditation,” and ask to see the truths that God wills to reveal to you during the meditation.

The exciting thing about guided meditations is that we can target any issue or goal and develop our own meditation. We can record these meditations on tape, CD, or mp3 and play them back for ourselves or others so we can meditate as one! They are powerful and fun. The basic process to prepare for a guided meditation is the same as our preparation for our individual meditations.

Let’s finish our meditation workshop today with a guided meditation upon oneness. To prepare let us begin by considering the lines of the following verse:

In the One we began,

We were sculpted from the One,

With the one we create,

In the one we abide eternally.

Guided Meditation upon Oneness

· Today we will connect with God as the formless love of the One. This is a meditation that can be undertaken individually or as a group.

· Let us pray: Beloved Lord guide us today to be one with you as we were in the beginning. Protect us as we meditate together upon you and let nothing influence us that is not your will. Ultimately, let only the will of the One God be done in us.

· Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor and your hands in your lap or cross legged on the floor in the lotus posture.

· Mentally check your body from your feet to your head and make sure you are totally relaxed. If you need to, systematically tense and relax your muscles to relax them.

· Close your eyes and take 4 or 5 deep breaths breathing in to the count of five, holding for a count of five, and exhaling to the count of five, and transition into a slow, natural rhythmic breath that will get slower and slower as you become more relaxed.

· Focus your attention between your eyebrows to your third eye. You may or may not see a point of light, or feel the skin itch, or tingle at the center of the forehead.

· Sound the OM three times out loud with me to “dial –into” God.

· Move your awareness into that sacred space within your heart, your inner temple, the kingdom of heaven within you.

· Normally our space can be anything you need it to be, but today see yourself standing in the center of an enormous space that expands into infinity. This space has white light coming from every direction. It is as if you stood on a glowing, golden, white marble floor in the midst of a cloud of light that is the white fire core of the presence of God that you are. It is as if you stand in the center of a sun, but are perfectly cool because you are vibrating at the same high frequency.

· In this infinite throne room you see a shining figure standing before you. This figure is your God presence. The body is made of light and is barely discernable from the blazing sun-like aura that enfolds the divine figure.

· You kneel before your God in reverence, but God raises you up and smiles at you with a twinkle in his eye. The look says, “I love you with all my heart just as you are.” At this moment you know you are loved unconditionally.

· Your lord and God embraces you and your bodies melt away. All that is left is the light, the sun of God that you are. You are one with the One.

· In this light, feel yourself connected to all of life. You are one with God and every other part of life.

· With each breath you are breathing in God. You stand in God and God fills you.

· Every breath is an embrace by your beloved Father/ Mother God. You are one in God’s embrace of light. Your body is God’s. Your breath is God’s. You are God.

· For the next few moments let go of all other thoughts and just be one in God’s embrace of light and love.

· One with God, feel the divine light and love radiate out from you to bless and sustain creation. Notice how your love for all people and things is unconditional. Notice the incredible joy you feel as you are blessing life.

· One with God, you are re-aligning with perfection and you are healed and enlightened.

· As you rest in the One, accept and trust that your real needs and concerns have always been addressed.

· Continue to bathe in God’s loving light. You cannot see yourself in that blazing sphere of divinity. Only a formless loving God remains. That is who you really are. You are God. You are one.

· When you are ready, without losing your connection to God, see yourself slowly resolve from the light and become aware of yourself once again back in your body and back in your seat, ready to open your eyes. Silently express your gratitude to God for his love and the insights he has shown you during your meditation.

· May God the One, bless and keep you all, this day and every day to come! AMEN.

Today we answer for the world, which will be freed along with us. How glad are we to find our freedom through the certain way our Father has established. And how sure is all the world’s salvation, when we learn our freedom can be found in God alone.

God’s world is happy. Those who look on it can only add their joy to it, and bless it as a cause of further joy in them. We wept because we did not understand. But we have learned the world we saw was false, and we will look upon God’s world today.

You have been told to ask the Holy Spirit for the answer to any specific problem, and that you will receive a specific answer if such is your need. You have also been told that there is only one problem and one answer. In prayer this is not contradictory. There are decisions to make here, and they must be made whether they be illusions or not. You cannot be asked to accept answers which are beyond the level of need that you can recognize. Therefore, it is not the form of the question that matters, nor how it is asked. The form of the answer, if given by God, will suit your need as you see it. This is merely an echo of the reply of His Voice. The real sound is always a song of thanksgiving and of love.

You cannot, then, ask for the echo. It is the song that is the gift. Along with it come the overtones, the harmonics, the echoes, but these are secondary. In true prayer you hear only the song. All the rest is merely added. You have sought first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all else has indeed been given you.

The secret of true prayer is to forget the things you think you need. To ask for the specific is much the same as to look on sin and then forgive it. Also in the same way, in prayer you overlook your specific needs as you see them, and let them go into God’s Hands. There they become your gifts to Him, for they tell Him that you would have no gods before Him; no Love but His. What could His answer be but your remembrance of Him? Can this be traded for a bit of trifling advice about a problem of an instant’s duration? God answers only for eternity. But still all little answers are contained in this.

Prayer is a stepping aside; a letting go, a quiet time of listening and loving. It should not be confused with supplication of any kind, because it is a way of remembering your holiness. Why should holiness entreat, being fully entitled to everything love has to offer? And it is to Love you go in prayer. Prayer is an offering; a giving up of yourself to be at one with Love. There is nothing to ask because there is nothing left to want. That nothingness becomes the altar of God. It disappears in Him.

This is not a level of prayer that everyone can attain as yet. Those who have not reached it still need your help in prayer because their asking is not yet based upon acceptance. Help in prayer does not mean that another mediates between you and God. But it does mean that another stands beside you and helps to raise you up to Him. One who has realized the goodness of God prays without fear. And one who prays without fear cannot but reach Him. He can therefore also reach His Son, wherever he may be and whatever form he may seem to take.

Praying to Christ in anyone is true prayer because it is a gift of thanks to His Father. To ask that Christ be but Himself is not an entreaty. It is a song of thanksgiving for what you are. Herein lies the power of prayer. It asks nothing and receives everything. This prayer can be shared because it receives for everyone. To pray with one who knows that this is true is to be answered. Perhaps the specific form of resolution for a specific problem will occur to either of you; it does not matter which. Perhaps it will reach both, if you are genuinely attuned to one another. It will come because you have realized that Christ is in both of you. That is its only truth.
